Narratives can take on a life of their own in the NFL. A single move can spark days of speculation, with analysts and fans connecting dots that may not actually connect. Sometimes the simplest explanation turns out to be the right one. That appears to be the case with one of the biggest off-field storylines surrounding the Browns this week.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com shed new light on Shedeur Sanders’ decision to sign an agent and pushed back on the theory that he did it to pursue a trade.
“But two sources close to the situation tell cleveland.com that Sanders didn’t secure representation to seek a trade, and that he’s just in the process of building out his team now that he’s in his second NFL season. In fact, Sanders has been affiliated with Young Money since before the 2025 NFL Draft, but didn’t formally sign with the agency until this week,” Cabot wrote.
Sanders has been connected to Young Money since before the 2025 draft, which makes this week’s signing more of a formality than a sudden shift in strategy.
That also fits who Sanders is off the field. He has long been one of the most marketable young players in the sport, and building a team to manage his business opportunities is a natural step in his 2nd season, regardless of where he sits on the depth chart.
The report lines up with what the Browns have signaled about their quarterback room. Cabot reported earlier this month that the team would prefer to keep all 4 quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, even with Dillon Gabriel working his way back from injured reserve.
None of this guarantees Sanders stays put past the November 10 deadline. If a team makes a strong offer, Andrew Berry would have to consider it.
The same report also touched on Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter, who was among the candidates the Browns considered before hiring Todd Monken. Minter will be on the opposite sideline today in a game that could put Cleveland in 1st place in the AFC North.
For now, Sanders remains Watson’s backup and an important piece of the Browns’ long-term quarterback picture. But this report suggests the agent signing was about preparing for his future rather than forcing his exit, and that may quiet some of the trade chatter heading into the final stretch before the deadline.
