Hot seat lists are usually reserved for head coaches and struggling quarterbacks. When a receiver lands on one, it typically means his role has shrunk to the point where his future with the team is in serious doubt. The next few weeks can either revive his value or seal his fate. One Browns veteran finds himself in that spot heading into Sunday.
Bill Barnwell of ESPN included Jerry Jeudy among the players on the hot seat after 5 weeks.
“Jeudy has a line of eight catches for 81 yards this season, but he’s still only 27 years old and two years removed from a 1,229-yard campaign for the Browns in 2024. It’s tough to see a long-term future for him in Cleveland, but how he plays over the next few weeks might determine whether there’s real interest at the trade deadline from a team that wants to give the 2020 first-round pick a meaningful role,” Barnwell wrote.
Jeudy had been playing roughly half of the offensive snaps each week before dipping to just 38% in the Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the young receivers have firmly taken over as the focal points of the passing game.
His production reflects that shift. Jeudy’s 8 catches for 81 yards through 5 games are hard to reconcile with the receiver who topped 1,200 yards just 2 years ago.
Barnwell’s key point is that the next few weeks could define his trade market. Teams like the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles have been linked to him, but contenders will want proof that he can still produce before giving up meaningful draft capital.
That makes Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens an important audition. KC Concepcion is still working through the concussion protocol, and if he cannot play, Jeudy could see a bigger share of the snaps and targets.
The Browns’ asking price raises the stakes even further. Jordan Schultz reported that Cleveland wants something in the early 3rd- to 4th-round range, a number that will be difficult to reach unless Jeudy shows he can still be a productive option.
If the market never materializes, Barnwell expects his role to shrink even more. Denzel Boston, Concepcion, Isaiah Bond and the tight ends could all cut into his snaps in the 2nd half of the season.
Harold Fannin Jr. is part of that equation. The Browns are committed to developing their young pass catchers, and Jeudy no longer fits neatly into that plan.
At 27, Jeudy still has time to rebuild his value, whether in Cleveland or somewhere else. A strong showing against Baltimore could reignite interest before the November 10 deadline, while another quiet afternoon would likely confirm that his best days with the Browns are behind him.
