The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback battle has been the most notable subplot of training camp this offseason as Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders take turns with the starters in practice in their efforts to secure the Week 1 job. Dillon Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green have shown some sparks as well, but the starting gig is likely Watson’s to lose at this point.
A few days ago, Watson took all the first-team reps on a day that was supposed to be Sanders’ day with the starters, causing many to believe this QB competition was over and wondered if Sanders was in danger of being traded or demoted to third string. That isn’t the case, as Sanders got another day with the starters on Wednesday and put forth a solid day’s work.
ESPN Cleveland shared the stats from all the QBs during Day 13 of camp on Wednesday. Sanders had a nice day, going 13-for-21 with a touchdown and no interceptions.

Watson was 12-for-17 and Gabriel was 4-for-5 while both recorded no touchdowns or interceptions. Green didn’t attempt any passes as the team continues to ease him into action.
The lack of turnovers was a nice development, as interceptions and pre-snap penalties have been major issues in camp thus far. Watson is approaching double-digit interceptions in camp, but it doesn’t sound like that has been enough to deter the team from ultimately naming him the starter.
Sanders struggled taking care of the ball last season as he threw ten picks and lost a fumble in his eight games as a rookie. He’ll need to clean that up if he is going to convince this organization that he can be the long-term guy at QB, and so far in camp, it appears as if he has done so.
Fans will have to wait until both Sanders and Watson take the field in preseason for the team to name a starter, but it looks like it doesn’t matter what Sanders does at this point. It would be shocking if Watson isn’t the starter, but that doesn’t mean Sanders won’t wrestle the job away from him during the regular season at some point.
