Cleveland has spent the better part of a week fielding outside criticism about its quarterback situation, and now a national insider has put a timeline around when a decision might actually get made. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport revealed Cleveland plans to approach the coming weeks.
He said the Browns will evaluate Watson after his Week 2 performance and consider a change for the home opener in Week 3.
“While no firm decision has been made for Week 3, the belief is that the first two games would serve as a natural evaluation point. In other words, the Browns could use the return to Cleveland for their Week 3 home opener and a two-game sample size as the impetus for a quarterback change,” Rapoport said.
According to the report, Watson earned the right to open the season under center through his play in camp and his experience level, but Week 1 left plenty of people inside the building frustrated. The issues went beyond just quarterback play, with the overall operation struggling across the board in a 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Watson finished that game 16 of 22 for 205 yards with a touchdown and an interception, numbers that were not disastrous on paper but did not settle any of the surrounding questions either.
A strong performance and a win Sunday against Tampa Bay would give Cleveland an easy call to stick with Watson. A poor showing in another loss opens the door to a change before the home opener. It is the middle ground, an outcome that falls somewhere between clearly good and clearly bad, that leaves the front office with the harder decision.
With Cleveland holding multiple first-round picks in the 2027 draft, the front office is already positioned to pursue one of college football’s top quarterback prospects if this season does not answer its questions at the position.
Monken has publicly maintained his support for Watson, telling reporters after reviewing the tape that he planned to stick with him. Whether that support survives the two-game sample now hinges entirely on what happens Sunday afternoon in Tampa.
