Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders has been a popular name in the sports world ever since his college days, playing under his father Deion Sanders at Colorado University. He was a hyped prospect coming into the draft, but eventually fell to the Browns in the fifth round.
Since being drafted, Sanders has been a much-talked about name and gets a lot of criticism despite only playing eight games during his rookie season. The second-year quarterback recently opened up to Cosmopolitan about his public perception.
“I wish people understood me more as a human being. I don’t think a lot of people really know me. Why would you think I’m a bad guy? So I’ve been looking at things a lot more lately, like, ‘Why would people think this?’ It’s not something I’m going to put [solely] on myself, but I do want to fix that. I want to connect with more people, so they can meet me and see the truth,” Sanders said.
Because of his father and his name, the public has already made an opinion about who Shedeur Sanders is without giving him a fair chance. It’s not easy for the children of star athletes.
Having the last name Sanders almost makes it more difficult to break out from his father’s shadow. Sanders didn’t get drafted because he is Deion’s son, but because of the performance during the 2024 season at Colorado. He threw for 4,134 passing yards with 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 13 games.
Sadly, many view Sanders as someone who wants everything handed to him. The only way to change this is to continue working hard and being an unselfish person and teammate. The camera is going to be on Sanders whether he wants it to be or not. He needs to put his head down and continue to work hard and block out the noise. As we’ve seen with Deshaun Watson, winning can cure a lot of things in the public eye, so Sanders just needs to continue being the man he is and improving his game on the field.
