The recent retirement announcement by Nick Chubb was treated with reverence by the Cleveland Browns. The running back was one of their most admired players during his seven seasons with the team.
Not only did Chubb excel on the field, with four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, but he also showed tremendous perseverance in working his way back from a devastating leg injury he suffered in the 2023 season. But he was never the same player after that, which led to his somewhat early retirement.
With Chubb’s exemplary career in mind, insider Tony Grossi named him as part of his Mount Rushmore of Browns running backs, along with Jim Brown, Marion Motley and Leroy Kelly.
“1. Jim Brown, 2. Marion Motley, 3. Leroy Kelly, 4. Nick Chubb. Mount Rushmore of Cleveland Browns running backs,” Grossi posted.

Brown is arguably the greatest running back in NFL history, and Motley and Kelly are with him as inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Chubb may have been on that trajectory himself before his injury.
A second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Chubb ranks third in Cleveland franchise history with 6,843 rushing yards, behind only Kelly (7,274) and Brown (12,312). Chubb is third in touchdowns and fourth in attempts. He also has the longest run in team history, a 92-yard TD as a rookie.
A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Chubb’s best season was in 2022, when he posted 1,525 yards rushing and 12 TDs. In 2019, he had 1,494 yards rushing with eight TDs.
In Week 2 of the 2023 season, Chubb tore the ACL, MCL, meniscus, and medial capsule in his left knee. After more than a year of recovery, he returned to action on Oct. 20, 2024, which was the same game in which quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered an Achilles injury that sidelined him for almost two years.
After playing for the Houston Texans last season, there were rumors that Chubb might be heading toward a homecoming with the Browns. Cleveland was potentially seeking a veteran backup for Quinshon Judkins, but it was not to be.
Now, fans will eagerly await the chance to honor Chubb at an upcoming home game, perhaps as soon as this season.
