Browns’ Depth Chart Has One Notable Unresolved Question

The Cleveland Browns took a lot longer than they wanted to name a starting quarterback, with head coach Todd Monken finally landing on Deshaun Watson coming out of the second preseason game. They are taking even longer to name their final starter on offense.

The rebuild of the entire offensive line was going to be a long process as it was, but developments during training camp have pushed its completion all the way to the days leading up to the season opener. With less than a week to go before taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars, one spot remains open, at least publicly.

The Browns’ depth chart has one notable unresolved question, with Teven Jenkins trying to hold off Austin Barber as the starting right guard.

Jenkins was re-signed as a free agent this offseason as the Browns began the process of replacing all five of their most-used starters from last season. He made four starts at right guard last season when Wyatt Teller was injured.

So, as the pieces were put into place, that job remained there for the taking. But Jenkins missed time during training camp with an undisclosed injury, giving an opportunity to players such as Dawand Jones, KT Leveston, and Trye Phillips to replace him.

None of them were able to seize the job, and Leveston and Phillips aren’t even on the team anymore. But it was clear that the Browns were looking for an upgrade, so they started experimenting with Barber, a third-round pick from the 2026 NFL Draft who played tackle at the University of Florida.

He has been impressive enough in limited time to challenge for the starting job. If he doesn’t have it on Sunday, it likely won’t be much longer before he takes over, barring injuries elsewhere on the line.

With Tytus Howard at right tackle, rookie Spencer Fano at left tackle, Zion Johnson at left guard, and Elgton Jenkins at center, there is one more piece of the puzzle to be put in place before the first offensive snap of the season.
