Insider Isn’t Buying One Browns Season Prediction

The Cleveland Browns have heard just about every low expectation imaginable heading into the 2026 season, and a four-win projection has become one of the more common numbers thrown around by national analysts. New coaching staff, a rebuilt defense and a brutal opening slate against Jacksonville have all fed into the pessimism surrounding this team. But not everyone covering the Browns closely is willing to accept that number.

Veteran Cleveland.com insider Mary Kay Cabot pushed back on that outlook while discussing the season.

“I do think that the defense is going to play well…that’s why, when I look at 4 (wins), that seems low to me. It’s the easiest schedule in the NFL, going by records from last season.  I just don’t see four. That’s pretty low. I think they are gonna win more games than that. I would bet the over, which I think is still 5.5.  But I think it’s going to be tough on these guys and it’s going to take a lot of leadership to get them through the tough times,” Cabot said.

Four wins would represent one of the more disappointing seasons in recent franchise memory, and it assumes a defense that would struggle.

Todd Monken inherited a roster with real questions on offense, but the defensive side returns talented pieces around Jared Verse, including Denzel Ward and a group that has produced under Mike Rutenberg even as the scheme adjusts to life without Myles Garrett. If that unit performs the way Cabot expects, it changes expectations for how many games this team can realistically win, regardless of how shaky the offense looks in stretches.

Leadership remains the variable nobody can measure until the season actually unfolds. Verse arrives from a Rams program with a winning culture, and Cleveland will need him to set a tone quickly given the losses on that side of the ball. There is enough talent to exceed the four-win expectation being set nationally, even if the road ahead remains difficult.
