Fourth down is where games swing in a single snap. When an offense decides to go for it, both teams know exactly what is at stake, and the defense has one chance to flip momentum. Teams that win those moments tend to win close games, and the Browns have played nothing but close games this season. One number shows how often their defense has come through.
A graphic shows that Cleveland ranks 3rd in the NFL in 4th-down defense, stopping opponents on 71.4% of their attempts through 7 games.

That stop rate is a big reason the Browns are 5-2. In a season where all 5 wins were decided in the final 4 minutes, every extra possession matters, and taking the ball away on downs gives the offense a short field or a fresh chance to take the lead.
The win over the Tennessee Titans was a good example. Tennessee went 1-for-2 on 4th down, and the stop came in the 1st half, when the Browns were working back from a 14-0 deficit. Cleveland scored 17 straight points after that.
This trend fits the identity Mike Rutenberg has built. The Browns are just as tough near their own goal line, holding opponents to touchdowns on less than half of their red zone trips.
The matchup with Pittsburgh makes this stat especially important. The Steelers have built their offense around Jaylen Warren and heavy personnel, often using 2 tight ends. Those are the looks teams lean on in short-yardage situations, and Pittsburgh will likely try to win at the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 4th down.
The Browns already won that battle once. In the first meeting, after Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown to cut Cleveland’s lead to 21-16, the Steelers went for 2, and Quincy Williams made a big hit to stop Warren short. That stop kept the Browns in front until the final minutes.
Health could decide whether they can do it again. Mason Graham and Mike Hall Jr. were both limited Wednesday with ankle injuries, while Jared Verse missed practice with a knee injury. Getting the interior of the defensive line healthy would make Cleveland even harder to move in short yardage.
If the game comes down to a 4th-down call in Pittsburgh, the Browns have reason to like their chances.
