As many teams in the NFL will do, the Cleveland Browns emerged from their first preseason game making some changes to their training camp roster. After getting to evaluate players against the Chicago Bears, the Browns made their first moves on Monday because of an injury.
Cleveland added tight end Jermaine Terry after Brenden Bates suffered an undisclosed injury on Saturday. Now, they are letting go of one of their backup offensive linemen to add a wide receiver to the mix.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns are adding wide receiver Ben Patterson and waiving guard Jack Conley.
“Browns have signed WR Ben Patterson and waived G Jack Conley,” Cabot posted.

Conley has been back and forth with the Browns during training camp. After spending part of last season on Cleveland’s practice squad, he was waived on Aug. 4.
Then, with the offensive line dealing with some injuries, he was brought back on Aug. 7. Now, after not playing particularly well against the Bears, he has been waived again, with the Browns seemingly set at guard with KT Leveston making a strong impression.
Patterson was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason as an undrafted free agent and was waived on Aug. 2. A 6-foot-5, 220-pound rookie out of Texas-Permian Basin, he had 32 catches for 678 yards and five touchdowns during the 2025 season.
It is unclear where the Browns might use Patterson, as their wide receiver depth chart is nearly full, headed by Jerry Jeudy, Denzel Boston, KC Concepcion, and Isaiah Bond. Tylan Wallace is thought to have the fifth spot secured, leaving just one likely opening on the final 53-man roster.
It is thought that Cedric Tillman, Gage Larvadain, Malachi Corley, Luke Floriea, and Kole Wilson are competing for that final spot. Tillman sat out on Saturday, while Larvadain led the Browns with four catches for 37 yards on seven targets, including a 24-yard catch from Shedeur Sanders.
Based on his size, the Browns may envision a role for Patterson on the practice squad as he tries to develop his game.
