Nobody expected the Cleveland Browns to get off to a 3-1 start a month ago. All the preseason concerns about the new regime and the questionable quarterback situation became justified after getting blown out by the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1, but somehow this team has come together to win three in a row and drastically change the trajectory of this season and all the narratives around the organization.
Thursday Night Football was a chance for the casual fans around the world to perhaps get their first glimpse of just how talented the young core now is in Cleveland. GM Andrew Berry may not have the quarterback position solved long-term right now, but he has done a sensational job drafting and developing talent nearly everywhere else on the field, so when that next young potential franchise comes aboard, he’ll be stepping into an enviable and sustainable situation.
The national media is beginning to notice and give the team credit. NBC analyst and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett recently stopped by The Dan Patrick Show to talk about Cleveland’s start and he had nothing but positive things to say about the Browns.
“I love the start. Think about what they’ve done. They got rid of the best defensive player in the National Football League and look at how they’re playing. Deshaun Watson, go back to every pundit over the last six months. When are they going to get rid of this guy? You can’t win with this guy,” said Garrett. “They’ve got some issues like everybody else does, but what a great start.”
Garrett is always one of the most positive analysts out there, but the Browns simply haven’t given fans or analysts much to feel positive about for quite some time. At 3-1 and with young talents shining on both sides of the ball, Browns fans are feeling on top of the world for the first time in a long time.
The most surprising part could be losing Myles Garrett and keeping the arrow pointing up, as Jason Garrett pointed out. The Browns had every excuse to fall off a cliff this season after trading a guy who racked up 23 sacks last season and starting a quarterback who hasn’t been good at football in six years.
There is so much football still ahead of them, but a better start wasn’t possible for the Browns. We’ll see if they can keep it rolling at the New York Jets in Week 5.
