Cleveland Browns fans were initially shocked to see the news that the team traded for Deshaun Watson and subsequently signed him to the biggest fully guaranteed contract in league history. Watson was still dealing with his off-field issues at the time and was suspended for most of the 2022 season.
Fast forward to today, and four seasons later, Watson has only appeared in 19 career games for this organization. This is, of course, a disappointment given how much the team invested in him, and considering that he missed the 2025 season with an injury, fans wondered if they’d ever see him on the field again.
Watson might get at least one more opportunity with the Browns, at least, if the new coaching staff is willing. A recent video shared via ESPN Cleveland showed Watson throwing, which is the first step to him getting back on the field and trying to be a meaningful contributor.
“Browns QB Deshaun Watson throwing this offseason. Do you think Watson or Shedeur Sanders should start week 1?” ESPN Cleveland posted.

As fans know, being able to throw a few passes on the practice field and suiting up in a legitimate NFL game are two completely different things. But Watson is mobile and looking a lot better than he did last year at this time, so there’s no telling what he’ll be like when Week 1 rolls around.
Barring a free agent addition or a surprising pickup in the draft, the Browns’ quarterback competition is shaping up to be a battle between Watson and Shedeur Sanders. Sanders had his moments at times last season, but there were also plenty of moments where his inexperience showed up.
At the end of the day, Todd Monken and the coaching staff are going to roll with the player who they believe gives them the best chance of winning football games. Whether it’s Sanders, Watson, or a player to be named later, this organization is in desperate need of someone who can be consistent under center.
