Roster deadlines have a way of forcing decisions teams would rather delay. A front office can keep its options open for weeks, but once the calendar hits a certain date, it has to commit one way or the other. The Browns are approaching one of those moments in their quarterback room. The clock is now ticking on one of their young passers.
Tony Grossi laid out the timeline the Browns are facing when Dillon Gabriel returns from the IR on Oct 6th.
“Browns designated QB Dillon Gabriel for return from IR on Oct 6. The 21-day practice window ends on Oct 27. Browns must make Gabriel active by that day or he stays on IR all season,” Grossi posted.

That gives the Browns less than a week to decide. Dillon Gabriel opened the season on injured reserve with a back injury, but he has been a full participant in practice since returning, so health does not appear to be the obstacle.
The obstacle is space. Deshaun Watson is the starter, Shedeur Sanders is the backup and rookie Taylen Green was the emergency 3rd quarterback against the Baltimore Ravens. Activating Gabriel would give the Browns 4 quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.
Keeping four quarterbacks would be unusual, especially for a roster dealing with injuries at running back, defensive tackle and safety, where every spot matters.
Leaving Gabriel on injured reserve would keep him under contract for 2027 without costing a roster spot this season. It would also take away a developmental year for a 2025 3rd-round pick who started multiple games as a rookie before Sanders took over.
The timing complicates things. The window closes on October 27, 2 weeks before the November 10 trade deadline. If the Browns activate Gabriel, they will need to clear a spot first, which could push them to decide on another quarterback earlier than planned.
The long-term picture matters most. Watson is in the final year of his contract, and the Browns hold 2 first-round picks in 2027. How they handle Gabriel, Sanders and Green over the next few weeks will reveal how much they believe any of them can be part of the future.
For now, Cleveland is focused on a home game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Two days later, the Browns will have to make a call that could shape their quarterback room well beyond this season.
