Todd Monken was hired as Cleveland Browns head coach and the unlikely successor to Kevin Stefanski due to his experience, his offensive acumen, and his leadership ability. He wasn’t the first choice on just about anybody’s list, but time could tell that he was exactly what the Browns needed given where the organization is in its development.
Even though Monken will have his hands full fixing this offense, this is his first head coaching gig and he can’t take for granted the fact that he inherited a strong defense with a solid foundation. Safety Grant Delpit is one of those foundational pieces and he sounds like he is already on board with the new regime.
Delpit spoke about Monken in a recent YouTube short on the Browns’ channel and said he appreciated how direct and passionate he is. These are traits many have praised of Monken, and with each of his media sessions, his genuine nature shines through.
“[The directness and the passion are] what you get with top-tier coaches like him. Been around the game for so long. Finally getting his chance as an NFL head coach. I know he has a lot to prove. It’s a lot on the table for him, but he can handle it, so let’s do it,” Delpit said.
Delpit has clearly liked what he has seen in camp, including the performance of the two exciting rookie receivers in KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston. What he has seen must have been encouraging enough for him to commit to this team’s future since he signed a fat three-year extension this offseason.
Monken has won a lot of fans, players, and media members over in a short amount of time due to the fact that he wears his heart on his sleeve. He is much more than an offensive guru — he is someone who will let everyone on this roster know exactly where they stand.
It’s unclear how this season is going to unfold due to the mess at quarterback, but if Monken can weather the storm, he could be the long-term solution at head coach for a young team in desperate need of some stability. If Delpit is on board, everyone else who isn’t on board yet will get there soon.
