The Cleveland Browns are hopeful that they’ve found their kicker of the future in Andre Szmyt. He posted a strong rookie season last year, so we’ll see if he can carry that momentum into the 2026 season.
Recently, Szmyt sat down to do an interview ahead of the upcoming season. The second-year kicker talked about the adjustments he has made and how he has been improving during training camp.
“Just getting comfortable, settling down, getting into a rhythm, and not making the moment bigger than what it is. Just kind of feeling you go out there and you’re in a good rhythm. I think that’s the only way I can put it. You feel like your operation is smooth and the tempo is good and you’re making clean contact. It almost feels like you don’t have to think much about it. That’s just what I’m trying to get to now. Start that earlier in the season, just get into a good rhythm. That’s what I’m trying to do in training camp and preseason, working with the guys, getting as comfortable as possible to start off in that flow state,” Szmyt said.
Szmyt got off to a rough start last season, but he was able to turn it around. The 27-year-old is focused on getting off to a better start and remaining more consistent from start to finish. Despite a rocky beginning, Szmyt still posted strong stats last season.
Across 16 games, Szmyt connected on 24-of-27 field goals and 25-of-26 extra point attempts. That’s a strong rookie season that hopefully Szmyt can build on this upcoming year. It sounds like Szmyt is in the right headspace, which is half the battle when you’re a kicker.
The talent is clearly there, so Szmyt might only need to make a few minor tweaks to his game. The Browns could very well have a kicker for the next decade in Szmyt. Browns fans are probably tired of hearing that tale after going through Cade York and Dustin Hopkins fairly quickly. It seems like the Browns are going through a new kicker just about every season. Szmyt is putting in the work and will hopefully be new and improved this upcoming season.
