Not every transaction tells a full story by itself. Some moves only make sense once the next one comes, and teams rarely explain the reasoning until everything is official. With the trade deadline just days away, every small change to the Browns’ roster is getting extra attention. A move on Thursday afternoon has one longtime Browns reporter wondering what is coming next.
Zac Jackson reacted after the Browns announced they had released TE Carsen Ryan, a player they promoted just a day earlier.
“This indicates they need a spot for someone else, so curious what’s next.,” Jackson said.

The timing is what makes this stand out. The Browns signed Carsen Ryan from the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday morning, and less than 36 hours later, he was waived. It is the 2nd time this season Cleveland has let the rookie go, after he was also waived when Dillon Gabriel came off injured reserve last month.
The tight end situation makes the decision even more curious. Harold Fannin Jr. was added to Thursday’s injury report and limited with a groin injury, the same issue that ended his rookie season and kept him out for much of the offseason. Cutting a tight end on the same day that news came out suggests the Browns have a different plan for that roster spot.
Jackson’s read makes sense. Teams do not usually reverse a promotion that quickly unless something else is in the works.
There are a few possibilities. The Browns could be preparing to activate a player from injured reserve, claim someone off waivers or make room for a trade. Tight end has been named as a possible deadline target, with the team being linked to Dallas Goedert, Charlie Kolar and Luke Schoonmaker, and many expect Andrew Berry to look for depth on the defensive line.
Todd Monken said this week that Berry runs ideas by him throughout the season and that roster moves are an ongoing process, not just a deadline issue. That leaves plenty of room for the next move to be either small or significant.
For now, Browns fans will have to wait to see who fills the spot. With the deadline set for Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, the answer may not take long.
