With Deshaun Watson still in concussion protocol and not practicing on Thursday, it’s starting to look like Shedeur Sanders will make his first start of the season for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday when his squad takes on the New Orleans Saints. It’s a great opportunity to showcase the improvements he has made since last season, especially since he is going up against a team that is 0-4 at home and giving up nearly 30 points per game on their own field.
Sanders also might be auditioning for 31 other teams with the trade deadline coming up, but that is a conversation for another day. All the focus now is on putting last week’s loss behind them and getting to 6-3 in New Orleans, and if you ask rookie receiver Denzel Boston, he has all the confidence in his second-year quarterback.
While speaking with the media on Thursday, Boston raved about Shedeur Sanders. He spoke about how much he likes his quarterback’s confidence and how it fires up the entire offense.
“Shedeur takes the field with confidence. He has unwavering confidence in himself, and that only boosts us as a team up from the offensive line, to the receivers, to the running backs. We feed off that confidence. The way that he’s able to read defenses, move us into the best play possible. That’s something that I definitely highlight about Shedeur as well,” Boston said.

Boston looked comfortable with Deshaun Watson right out of the gate and the veteran’s presence was certainly a factor in why he was named the starting quarterback. Watson has been stable and has helped all these young weapons flourish in their roles, but Boston has cooled off over the past three games and could use a big performance on Sunday.
Boston has 79 receiving yards and no touchdowns over the past three games after posting at least one reception over 25 yards in each of his first five contests. The targets are still there (25 over the last three games), but the production hasn’t been. With Sanders’ affinity for throwing it deep and New Orleans’ vulnerability to those kind of plays, we’ll see if Todd Monken’s game plan on Sunday involves more than a couple of shots deep downfield to the young wideout.
There are a lot of mouths to feed within this offense, and on Sunday, we might find out if Sanders is capable of keeping them all well fed. He didn’t have this kind of artillery to work with when he was the starter last season, so this will be a great test to see how far he has come.
