The Cleveland Browns are bringing back a familiar face.

According to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio, the Browns are expected to hire former Cowboys assistant Ben Bloom as a senior defensive assistant.

Before his nine-year stint in Dallas, Bloom started his NFL coaching career in Cleveland.

The Beginning In Cleveland

In 2009, Bloom got his first start in the NFL as an assistant defense/quality control coach with the Browns.

The Browns promoted Bloom to a defensive assistant in 2010.

His role with the team included preparing the team’s defense during practice, while also conducting film breakdowns.

Bloom worked with Matt Eberflus, which led to Bloom leaving.

When Eberflus left Cleveland for a position in Dallas, Bloom followed to become the next defensive quality control coach and assistant linebackers coach.

Nine Year Cowboys Run

Bloom started his tenure in Dallas in 2011 and worked his way to the defensive line in 2014 and 2015.

His role was working primarily with the defensive backs.

In 2016, Bloom assumed the role as the team’s assistant coach/special projects coach.

This included advising Jason Garrett on game plan matchups and schemes.

To be more specific, Bloom used “personnel group strategies, statistical analysis, game management, and situational football strategies.”

A Browns Reunion

The new coaching staff is getting excited.

Defensive linebackers coach Jason Tarver used to work with defensive coordinator Joe Woods.

Then, you throw into the pot that Bloom worked in Cleveland a decade ago.

A Shift In Dallas

When Garrett was let go, the rest of his staff was going to be dictated by the new coach.

As you can see, Mike McCarthy has been busy slicing away from the old regime.

Final Thoughts

Bloom’s coaching experience likely had nothing to do with the Cowboys moving on.

His tenure was matched to Garrett’s time with the Cowboys.

McCarthy has only kept offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as the lone holdover.

From what it looks like, the Browns snagged a likable coach with experience, who should fit right in.
