Joe Milton’s roster situation in Dallas took an interesting turn last week, cut loose by the Cowboys before being brought back to the practice squad just days later, and the whole sequence prompted a Browns fan to ask Mary Kay Cabot a fair question. Given Milton’s well-documented arm strength and mobility, why did Cleveland never show real interest in adding him to its own crowded quarterback room?
Cabot believes the Browns already have their own version of what Milton offers at the position.
“I think the Browns already have their own version of a tall, big armed, mobile quarterback in Taylen Green. I liked Milton when he was coming out, and wrote then that the Browns should draft him with a late round pick,” Cabot wrote.
Milton completed 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards and 3 touchdowns without a single interception across 3 preseason games this summer, but ultimately lost the backup job to Sam Howell. Rather than letting Milton walk for good, the Cowboys made a point of bringing him back once he cleared waivers, keeping him on as their third quarterback behind Howell and Dak Prescott.
Milton possesses traits like elite arm strength and legitimate mobility, and Cabot believes that Cleveland should have used a late-round pick on him coming out of college. Instead, the Browns have opted to develop Green, a 6-foot-6 dual-threat quarterback out of Arkansas who has already impressed teammates and coaches with his work ethic during camp.
The comparison makes plenty of sense on paper. Both quarterbacks offer teams a big-framed, live-armed option capable of extending plays with their legs, the type of developmental project that rarely costs much draft or salary cap capital but carries real upside if the physical tools eventually translate into consistent production. Adding another player with an almost identical profile in Milton would have felt like a redundancy. For now, Browns fans can watch Green’s development as their own answer to the traits Milton continues showcasing on the other side of the league.
