New Cleveland Browns edge rusher Jared Verse has massive shoes to fill and a ton of pressure on him as the main piece brought in via the Myles Garrett trade, but you wouldn’t know that by looking at him. He has assumed a prominent leadership role from the minute he walked into the facility and is showing all the signs of being the foundational young star Browns fans hoped they were getting once the blockbuster deal was announced.
Verse is one of the few new faces in a defense that is returning a lot of its core from last season. Collectively, they’ll be expected to be the heart and soul of this team once again, though the overhauls to the offensive personnel should ideally help that side of the ball catch up in 2026. That being said, the Browns are still big underdogs heading into a tough Week 1 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Verse doesn’t care about that.
During a recent press conference, Verse was asked about being underdogs heading into Jacksonville. To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Verse is focused on what he and his teammates can control and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks.
“I don’t really care about the motivation and I don’t really care too much about what other people think. My main focus is the Browns fans and the Browns organization. Respect is a thing you can’t just get. No one just hands you respect. You’ve got to earn that every week,” said Verse.

In case you were wondering, new head coach Todd Monken doesn’t care either. If the whole locker room takes on the mentality of these two newcomers, the fans should be in for a fun season.
Verse is just 25 years old and is positioned for a massive breakout year. He posted 7.5 sacks last year after logging 4.5 as a rookie, and while nobody is expecting him to replace Garrett’s 23 sacks all by himself, this is the year where many are expecting him to make the leap and become a double-digit sack threat.
It all starts in Jacksonville, and it’s encouraging that he is so unconcerned with any outside noise. There is certainly a lot of it surrounding this team, but as long as Verse and his boys put their heads down and keep working, everything will work out just fine.
