“Jim Rome: ‘I’ve Had The Back Of America’s QB, The Whole Time’

By Wendi Oliveros December 8, 2020 @WendiOliveros1

The Cleveland Browns soundly defeated the Tennessee Titans by a score of 41-35.

With the win, the Browns go to 9-3 on the season.

On Monday, Jim Rome looked like the cat that swallowed the canary on his show when talking about Mayfield.

For the record, he is one of the select few media personalities who hasn’t been an eternal critic of Mayfield.

He’s been chanting the Browns accomplishments, long before they started to come into fruition in 2020.

Rome coins Mayfield as “America’s Quarterback” and says he has had his back the entire time.

Here are the arguments that Rome says Baker Mayfield shattered yesterday.

1. Your team has won 8 games but what have you done?

2. They are not winning because of you but in spite of you.

3. They can’t win big games because of you.

As Rome describes it:

He did all of that while America constantly comes after him.

Tells him that 8-3 is not good enough, and making the playoffs isn’t good enough.

And in the process, Mayfield matched Otto Graham’s record from 1951 of 4 TD passes in the first half.

He only had 5 incompletions in 1st half, and one of those was a dropped TD pass

In the end, the Browns went on the road and dominated a really good and physical Titans team.

Coach Stefanski put the game in Baker’s hands and let him win it.

The Browns were then smart enough to shift it into a lower gear in the second half when the outcome of the game was not in doubt.

That’s smart play.

Rome said if people don’t want to believe him, maybe they should listen to Mayfield’s teammates.

Nick Chubb on Baker Mayfield

Here’s what Chubb said:

“Baker was on fire. That’s the guy I know. That’s the guy the Cleveland Browns know who he is. He came out, had a great game and led us to a victory.”

Mayfield on the city and fans’ reaction to the win.

He said:

“I would hope they feel exactly how I do.  We are going to be happy about this win until we wake up tomorrow, and then we are on to the next.  This is not the end of the season.  This is not what we set out to do. We did not set out to be 9-3. There is a lot of ball left, and we hope that way so job is not finished.”

Next Is Baltimore

Mayfield makes it clear that the Browns are not going to rest on yesterday’s laurels.

They are back at work today preparing for the Baltimore Ravens game, one week from today.

The Ravens manhandled the Browns in Week 1 by a score of 38-6.

After yesterday’s game, no one should expect the same result.

The Cleveland Browns and Baker Mayfield had their statement game yesterday, and the rest of the league should be aware.
