The Cleveland Browns have a lot of moving parts as they get ready for Week 1. With so much young talent on either side of the ball and a whole new coaching staff in town, everyone is working hard to establish themselves and make it to Week 1 in one piece.
Nothing is more important than health at this stage of the process, but unfortunately with everyone pushing so hard, things inevitably happen. One key defender went down on Thursday as the team awaits clarity on the situation, and hopefully it’s not something that results in a long-term absence.
Camryn Justice of WEWS shared that defensive end Alex Wright injured his ankle on Thursday. He was looked at by the trainers for roughly five minutes and eventually carted off the field.
“#Browns DE Alex Wright injured his ankle in practice today. Trainers looked him over for about 5 mins before he was carted off the field,” Justice wrote.

This is a pivotal year coming up for Wright, especially with Myles Garrett no longer in town. A lot of the pressure to replace Garrett’s otherworldly production will naturally fall on Jared Verse’s shoulders, but nobody is replacing 23 sacks by themselves.
Obviously we won’t know until more information comes out, but this didn’t look great from Wright. You never want to speculate, but with just weeks to go until the regular season, this could certainly put his status for Week 1 in doubt.
The 25-year-old signed a three-year, $33 million extension this offseason and is locked in as a pivotal part of this front seven. He posted a career-high 5.5 sacks last season in 14 games and many are hoping he can go up another level in 2026, but this could serve as a legitimate bump in the road in his quest to become a 8-10 sack threat.
Hopefully some good news comes out in the next day or two and Wright dodges a bullet, because losing him for any length of time would be a severe blow to a front seven that isn’t exactly full of depth.
