Cleveland Browns fans haven’t seen Shedeur Sanders this season, which has led some to speculate about his future with the team. Some predict he could be traded soon because the Browns don’t seem to need him.
In fact, recent rumors have even said that Dillon Gabriel has been gobbling up Sanders’ reps during practices. Those stories suggest that Gabriel is now favored as the team’s prominent backup QB, casting even more doubt on what’s next for Sanders. Mary Kay Cabot said that’s not the case.
While talking on 92.3 The Fan, Cabot reiterated that Sanders is still the number two QB in Cleveland and that hasn’t changed at all.
“Shedeur Sanders is still the number two quarterback, and he’s still the next man up,” Cabot said.

According to Cabot, Sanders is still the player the Browns will look to if Deshaun Watson is injured during the 2026 season. Given Watson’s age and his history, there is definitely the possibility of that happening.
Some players might not be content being a backup QB, but Watson’s situation gives Sanders hope. Even if Watson doesn’t get injured this year and doesn’t need time off, Sanders’ position as the backup QB could pave the path for a bright future in Cleveland. Conventional wisdom says this is Watson’s last year with the Browns. It’s the final season of his contract, and most people assume he will part ways with the team.
If Sanders is still the backup QB for the Browns when Watson leaves, he’ll also be the frontrunner to step up and take over the top job. Of course, a lot can change between now and then. The Browns could find another quarterback they favor, either via a trade or the draft.
Sanders’ future position isn’t guaranteed, but his position might not be as bad as some people think. No matter what, there are plenty of Browns fans who would like to see Sanders on the field as soon as possible.
Just like last year, they believe Cleveland isn’t giving him the chance he deserves, and they aren’t happy with him sitting on the bench, even if he’s the “next man up.”
