The Cleveland Browns have certainly made a lot of mistakes over the past few decades. The biggest one is starting at quarterback in Week 1, but a new season brings a ton of new opportunities and with so many new faces in the building, there are plenty of reasons for the fans to be excited even if Deshaun Watson is going to get booed out of the building if he’s still the starter for the home opener in Week 3.
As if the team isn’t getting ripped hard enough for naming Watson the starter, that’s apparently not the only big decision the media has an issue with this offseason. Cornerback-turned-analyst Richard Sherman recently shared his issue with the Browns for hiring new head coach Todd Monken, which is a move a lot of people questioned at the time even if many have already come around on him.
During a recent episode of The Richard Sherman Podcast, the five-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion said that Cleveland hired the wrong guy. He believes, as many others did, that it should have been Jim Schwartz getting the big promotion from defensive coordinator.
“I still think they should’ve went with Jim Schwartz as the coach. That kind of soured me on the Browns this season,” said Sherman.
A lot of analysts and fans wanted Schwartz to get the job due to his experience and how great he did running the defense. There was also the fact that if he didn’t get the job he was leaving the team altogether, so losing him as the defensive coordinator leaves a major void behind as well.
That being said, we need to give Monken the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. He has decades of experience and has led some of the most explosive offenses in football over the past few years while winning national championships with Georgia and orchestrating one of the best rushing attacks in NFL history with the Baltimore Ravens.
A lot of people wanted Schwartz to be the guy, but with how sorely this offense needed an overhaul, it’s understandable why GM Andrew Berry went with Monken. He wasn’t atop anyone’s wish list, but sometimes that’s the move that needs to be made.
