The Cleveland Browns walked into Sunday hoping for a competitive opener under Todd Monken, and instead they are heading into halftime facing a deficit that has already spiraled out of hand. Turnovers, penalties and a defense that cannot get off the field have combined to put Cleveland in an early hole against Jacksonville, and the Browns’ own account confirmed just how lopsided things have gotten heading into the locker room.

Trevor Lawrence has been nearly unstoppable through two quarters, throwing for 155 yards and multiple touchdowns while carving up a Cleveland secondary that has struggled to contest anything downfield. Parker Washington alone has four catches for 69 yards and a score, and Jacksonville has moved the ball almost at will, racking up 234 total yards to Cleveland’s 95. Mike Rutenberg’s defense entered the season built around forcing turnovers, but through two quarters it has been the group on the field the longest, allowing 16 first downs and holding the ball for barely 11 minutes.
Deshaun Watson’s afternoon has been just as difficult. He finished the first half 3 of 5 for 24 yards with an interception and a fumble, the fumble recovered by his own team but the pick coming on a route.
The offensive line has not helped matters either. Zion Johnson went down grabbing at his knee and briefly left the game, forcing Zak Zinter into action before Johnson returned a short time later, only to draw back-to-back holding calls sandwiched around a false start and a delay of game on the same drive, a sequence that turned a manageable down and distance into first and 30. Running back Dylan Sampson was also ruled out for the remainder of the game with a knee injury, thinning out a backfield that already lost Teven Jenkins up front before kickoff.
None of this matches the identity Jared Verse and Quincy Williams spent the offseason promising. As one reporter put it, Cleveland has seen this same slow start play out repeatedly in training camp, and Jacksonville has made the Browns pay for it in every phase through two quarters.
The Browns have 30 minutes to prove Sunday is not simply a preview of a long season ahead.
