In-season workouts rarely make news. Teams bring in free agents almost every week to keep an emergency list ready, and most of those players never sign. Still, the positions a team chooses to look at can show where it is worried about depth. The Browns held a round of workouts on Friday, and a couple of the names drew some extra attention.
The workout list included center Gavin Gerhardt (Cincinnati), receiver Xavier Guillory (Arizona State), linebacker Jamon Johnson (Kentucky), receiver Tyler Johnson (Minnesota), guard Michael Jordan (Ohio State), linebacker Owen Pappoe (Auburn), linebacker Chris Paul (Ole Miss) and receiver Justin Shorter (Florida).

The positions are what matter. The Browns brought in 2 interior offensive linemen, 3 linebackers and 3 receivers, and each of those groups has been hit by injuries.
Linebacker is the most urgent concern. Quincy Williams was added to the injury report Thursday with a neck injury and is questionable for Sunday. Carson Schwesinger was limited all week with the ankle injury he played through against the Baltimore Ravens, though he did not receive a game designation.
The offensive line has issues as well. Teven Jenkins has been ruled out with a back injury for another week. Elgton Jenkins was a full participant Friday after missing Wednesday with a knee injury, but the Browns appear to want more depth at center and guard.
Receiver depth has also been tested. Bub Means was placed on the practice squad injured earlier this week, and both Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion were limited before practicing fully on Friday. Tyler Johnson, who won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Guillory, who was recently let go from the Ravens’ practice squad, would give the Browns experienced options if needed.
The rest of Friday’s injury report was mostly encouraging. Mason Graham, Quinshon Judkins, Boston, Concepcion and Tytus Howard all practiced fully and have no game designation. Kalia Davis, Mike Hall Jr., Teven Jenkins and Dillon Gabriel are out. Grant Delpit, Dylan Sampson, Williams and Denzel Ward, who was added with a hand injury, are questionable.
The workouts are mostly a precaution, but they show the Browns are planning for every outcome. With a 3-game road trip starting Sunday in Tennessee and the trade deadline approaching, Andrew Berry wants options ready if the injury list keeps growing.
