Colin Cowherd is consistently critical of Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield; this is not new.
What is new is that Cowherd shared a story on the air of his show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, on Friday about a personal interaction a close friend of his had with Mayfield on Thursday.
Cowherd’s friend is David Slay who runs Slay Italian Kitchen in Manhattan Beach, California.
Baker Mayfield was a patron in Slay’s restaurant on Thursday.
Cowherd posted the picture Mayfield took with Slay on his Twitter account late last night.

The Story Behind The Picture
Cowherd begins the story by saying,
“If I’m going to be critical of people, I’ve got to be fair.”
He then tells the unusual story of how Mayfield and Slay met.
There was an unruly customer who was making a scene of some sort outside.
Somehow during this customer’s visit to the restaurant, Mayfield picked up his bill.
Slay was in the dining room making contact with the customers apologizing for the incident.
He came across Mayfield’s table and introduced himself, and Mayfield did the same; Slay did not recognize Mayfield.
Slay then commented how his friend Colin Cowherd gives Mayfield a hard time.
What Happened Next
Slay chatted with Mayfield’s table which included friends and his wife Emily.
He told Cowherd in his 35 years of restaurant ownership, he never had a night like this, and of course, that is the first night Mayfield came in.
Slay was happy to meet and spend time with Mayfield telling Cowherd what a class act he was in the midst of an odd situation at the restaurant.

A Good Story
Given the wrangling between Mayfield and the media lately, this is a good story.
It gives us a glimpse of Mayfield the person who did a good deed unaware that Slay and Cowherd were friends or that the media would ever hear about it.
While a Cowherd and Mayfield bromance seems unlikely, it is still a positive story after a season of media negativity surrounding Mayfield.
