The Cleveland Browns are hours away from finding out what version of Deshaun Watson shows up in the season opener, and the quarterback himself sounds ready to embrace the moment. Months of questions about his health, his accuracy and his ability to push the ball downfield have followed Watson through the offseason and into fall. With kickoff against the Jaguars now approaching, he offered a simple but telling message about his mindset heading into Sunday.
Watson spoke with CBS Sports’ Tiffany Blackmon outside EverBank Stadium before the game.

He has spent the better part of two years dealing with a shoulder injury and a torn Achilles, and he has repeatedly said this camp marked the first time he felt fully healthy since 2023.
Todd Monken’s offense is built around explosive plays, and generating those requires a quarterback willing to take chances down the field rather than play conservatively out of caution. Watson’s accuracy on downfield throws has declined significantly over the past two seasons, and much of that decline has been tied to hesitation as much as raw arm talent. A quarterback who sounds ready to let it fly is exactly what this offense has been missing.
Jacksonville presents a difficult opening test for that mindset. The Jaguars finished among the league’s best defenses against downfield passing a season ago, and their pass rush figures to pressure a Browns offensive line still learning to play together for the first time. Watson cutting it loose against a defense built to punish exactly that approach will say a lot about whether his words match what shows up on tape.
There is also a bigger picture element to what Watson said. This season may represent his last real opportunity to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
