All of the Cleveland Browns’ victories this season could have wound up as a loss if a couple of plays had gone the other way. But perhaps none of them was more unlikely than their 13-10 win against the rival Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
Despite gaining just 46 yards on offense in the first half, the Browns only trailed 10-0. Then, down by a touchdown with less than 13 minutes to go, Cleveland linebacker Carson Schwesinger forced a fumble by Baltimore running back Derrick Henry, and the tide turned quickly. Deshaun Watson eventually engineered his league-leading fourth game-winning drive, which ended with Andre Szmyt’s 37-yard field goal after time expired, following an offside penalty on the Ravens.
So, after Week 6, the Browns are 4-2, which is a record that defies logic, as they have trailed in their games at a historic rate.
“The Browns have led for all of 1:12:56 this season, which ranks 28th in the NFL, and the four teams behind them (Saints, Chargers, Titans, Dolphins) are a combined 3-20. Per Tru Media Sports, only two teams have started a season 4-2 or better through 6 games and held a lead for less time. 2017 Dolphins: 46:32; 2009 Bengals: 1:03:48,” Spencer German posted.

By way of comparison, the 2017 Miami Dolphins finished that season 6-10, with a five-game losing streak after their good start. The 2009 Cincinnati Bengals fared much better, posting a 10-6 record and earning a wild-card playoff berth. Cincinnati extended its start to 7-2 and 9-4 before losing three of its last four, plus its playoff game.
Cleveland has scored first in just one game this season. It took a 10-0 lead against the Carolina Panthers in Week 3 before falling behind 18-13 in the fourth quarter. The Browns rallied for a 21-18 victory on a TD pass from Watson to Harold Fannin Jr.
They built a 21-10 halftime lead in Week 4 before the Pittsburgh Steelers rallied to tie it in the fourth quarter. Szymt kicked a 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds left for a 27-24 victory.
The Browns have outscored their opponents 47-36 in the fourth quarter this season. They are back in first place in the AFC North, but relying on late comebacks can become a dangerous proposition.
With the one-win Tennessee Titans up next in Week 7, Cleveland should be able to take a lead on the road, but if not, the Browns should have enough confidence to rally again if necessary.
