There was a point during last season when many Cleveland Browns fans were calling on the team to fire general manager Andrew Berry. They were unhappy with the whole organization and wanted it broken down and rebuilt from the ground up.
Not only did Berry keep his job, but according to Tony Grossi, he actually earned more power. Writing for The Land On Demand, Grossi stated that the Browns are now a “GM-dominated football operation.”
Berry is running the show, new head coach Todd Monken is reporting to him, and the team’s general manager is “clearly in charge.”
“With Paul DePodesta off to MLB and Todd Monken embarking on his first NFL head coach job, GM Andrew Berry is clearly in charge of all Browns football operations. Kevin Stefanski didn’t survive an 8-26 record the past two seasons, but Andrew Berry did. Berry not only survived it, he emerged with more authority than he’s had in six previous years as Browns general manager. It was disclosed in a Q&A session with Berry at NFL owners meetings this week that the current organization chart of Browns football operations calls for coach Todd Monken to report directly to Berry. The Browns are now clearly a GM-dominated football operation. That’s not unique. It puts the Browns in the company of the Bills, Eagles, Seahawks, Packers, Rams, Lions, Saints, Buccaneers and Colts,” Grossi wrote.
It sounds like the team’s ownership didn’t strip Berry of his abilities but actually added more to his plate. They believe in his vision for the franchise and are handing him the keys.
And while this might feel good for Berry, it could end up hurting him, too. In fact, it could end up costing him his job.
If the Browns don’t experience a serious turnaround in 2026, Berry will surely receive much of the blame. He is in charge, which means that all successes and failures are because of his choices.
This could be a huge year for the Browns and for their general manager. If the team improves and looks much better, Berry could be hailed as a hero. But if things don’t look better, everyone will know where to point their fingers.
Berry has more power, but now he might earn far more blame, too.
