Talent gets a player drafted, but character usually decides how far he goes. Teams spend months before the draft talking to coaches, teammates and anyone else who can explain who a prospect really is, because they know the toughest moments of an NFL career are rarely about ability. They come down to how a player handles adversity. Six months later, Todd Monken says the Browns’ scouting reports on one rookie were exactly right.
Monken praised KC Concepcion after Sunday’s 27-24 win over the Tennessee Titans.
“Real dude, man. He’s a real dude. Coming out of the draft, everyone said that about him. When you visit him and you’re around him, like, he’s diligent, he’s humble, competitive, got unbelievable fight,” Monken said.

Every trait Monken listed has shown up over the past few weeks.
The fight was obvious on Sunday. Concepcion was limited in practice most of the week with calf and quad injuries, then went out and caught 8 passes for 129 yards, the first 100-yard game of his career. He did it 2 weeks after being knocked out of the loss to the New York Jets by a helmet-to-helmet hit.
The humility showed in how he handled that hit. Most players would have been angry, especially as rookies, but he moved on and focused on getting back.
The competitiveness shows up in the details. Earlier this month, Concepcion said opposing punters had told him they would not give him a chance to return the ball, and he made it clear he wants those opportunities. After Sunday’s game, he called it his breakout performance and said he cannot wait to keep stacking weeks.
Monken’s point about diligence may matter most in the long run. Rookies who put in the work tend to improve as the season goes on, and Concepcion has already shown he can handle a bigger role when the offense needs it. With Denzel Boston quieter over the last 2 games, he stepped in as Deshaun Watson’s top target.
This kind of praise is not new for Monken’s locker room. He has called this team scrappy and built its identity around belief and toughness. Concepcion fits that description, and a young player with his talent and makeup can set the tone for the rest of the roster.
