On Saturday night, ESPN Insider Josina Anderson was the first to report that the Browns were close to an extension with the two-time Pro Bowl running back.
Before Saturday, Chubb was entering the final year of his rookie contract and was due to make $3,384,000 in 2021.
I'm told the #Browns and RB Nick Chubb are making progress in closing talks on a contract extension, at this time, per source. The 2-time Pro Bowler who rushed for 1,000+y yards the last two seasons (1,494 his 2nd year) is entering the final year of his original contract in 2018.

Chubb’s new deal is similar to the four-year, $50 million contract with $25.5 million guaranteed that Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry signed in 2020.
Henry is due an average of $12.5 million per year whereas Chubb is set to make $12.2 million per year.
Chubb’s new extension makes him the sixth-highest-paid running back on yearly averages, according to OverTheCap.com.
Chubb and Henry both are rated a 96 overall in the popular video game “Madden NFL 22,” but the Titans running back is rated slightly ahead.
Only Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey (97) is rated ahead of Chubb and Henry.
OverTheCap.com shows McCaffrey has the highest average annual salary among NFL running backs at about $16.02 million.
New Orleans’ Alvin Kamara ($15 million per year), Dallas’ Ezekiel Elliott ($15 million per year), Minnesota’s Dalvin Cook ($12.6 million) also make more on average per year than Chubb is due to make.
In June, fellow Browns running back Kareem Hunt was adamant that the team should give his teammate an extension.
“Pay that man,” Hunt said of Chubb. “He’s a freak of nature. He’s like a brother to me … hope we can play together for a long time.”
“Madden NFL 22” game makers have Hunt ranked as the 11th-best running back in the NFL at an 87 overall.
In 2020, Chubb started 12 games for the Browns with 190 carries, 1,067 yards rushing (seventh in the NFL) and 12 touchdowns.
Chubb averaged 5.6 yards per carry last season despite facing at least eight defenders in the box about 31.5% of the time, which was 10th highest in the NFL.
The Browns selected Chubb in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Chubb has played 44 regular-season games, compiling 3,557 rushing yards, 28 rushing touchdowns, 72 receptions, 577 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.
Since entering the NFL in 2018, Chubb has the highest yards per carry average (5.2) of any running back with at least 150 carries.

The Browns are also considering the possibility of offering contract extensions to quarterback Baker Mayfield, cornerback Denzel Ward and guard Wyatt Teller.
Mayfield and Ward are each entering their fourth NFL season.
Earlier this offseason, the Browns picked up Mayfield and Ward’s fifth-year options for 2022.
Teller, 26, enters the 2021 season in the final year of his deal.
